Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency Reports
(1877)
Description
Sixteen manuscripts from the Pinkerton Agency, including fourteen detectives’ reports, a typescript copy of the initiation ritual for a labor organization, and a printed list of members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The detectives’ reports concern investigations of individuals and organizations in Scranton, Pa. from August, 1877 to February, 1878. Efforts to identify participants and leaders in a city riot are described at length. A “Special Report” dated February, 1878 discusses the formation of a murder committee within the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
